Seismic sensitivity and communication in subterranean mammals

چکیده

Many subterranean mammals are reported to generate or respond to seismic vibrations. Potential uses of seismic sensitivity in these animals include intraspecific communication between burrow systems, location of prey, detection of predators and even “seismic echolocation” of distant obstacles. Although the auditory and/or somatosensory systems have been variously implicated, the mechanisms used for the detection of ground vibrations often remain unclear. This chapter will concentrate on three groups of subterranean mammals in which seismic sensitivity and/or communication has been studied in the most detail, the spalacid mole-rats, the bathyergid mole-rats and the golden moles, and will consider how the evolution of seismic sensitivity might have been affected by factors including digging mechanism, food type, sociality and phylogeny.

Seismic communication in a blind subterranean mammal: a major somatosensory mechanism in adaptive evolution underground.

Seismic communication, through low-frequency and patterned substrate-borne vibrations that are generated by head thumping, and which travel long distances underground, is important in the nonvisual communication of subterranean mole rats of the Spalax ehrenbergi superspecies (2n = 52, 54, 58, and 60) in Israel. This importance pertains both intraspecifically in adaptation and interspecifically ...

Seeing and not seeing.

Recent studies revealed that although subterranean mammals inhabit a dark underground environment, they can still perceive light stimuli and use this to entrain their circadian activity rhythm. Regarding spatial orientation, olfactory and tactile cues are employed for short-distance; whereas for long-distance, subterranean mammals employ the earth's magnetic field and self-generated (vestibular...

The use of seismic signals by fossorial southern African mammals: a neuroethological gold mine.

Behavioral adaptations exhibited by two African fossorial mammals for the reception of vibrational signals are discussed. The Namib Desert golden mole (Eremitalpa granti namibensis) is a functionally blind, nocturnal insectivore in the family Chrysochloridae that surface forages nightly in the Namib desert. Both geophone and microphone recordings in the substrate suggest that the golden mole is...

Massive Mallei in Moles: Middle Ear Adaptations Subserving Seismic Sensitivity

It has been popularly assumed, at least since the time of Pliny the Elder [1], that the hearing of moles and other subterranean mammals is acute, perhaps to compensate for their poor vision. In recent times, behavioural audiograms of subterranean species (most studies have been of rodents) have shown that audition is biased towards unusually low frequencies for such small mammals, typically bei...

Environmental influences in the evolution of tetrapod hearing sensitivity and middle ear tuning.

Vertebrates inhabit and communicate acoustically in most natural environments. We review the influence of environmental factors on the hearing sensitivity of terrestrial vertebrates, and on the anatomy and mechanics of the middle ears. Evidence suggests that both biotic and abiotic environmental factors affect the evolution of bandwidth and frequency of peak sensitivity of the hearing spectrum....
